Your Guide to Overloaded Skips
28/09/2022

If you have never hired a skip before it can be difficult to know where to fill the skip to. Overfilling the skip can be dangerous to staff and the general public and it could land you a fine. Please continue to read below to find out how to avoid overloading your next skip…..

How high can I fill a skip?

Every skip has maximum fill lines that indicate the highest level you can fill your skip. No items in the skip should exceed the top of the skip, if they do you will need to either reorganise your waste or hire another skip.

Why is there a limit?

Skips have a maximum fill limit for safety purposes. Filling a skip above the top creates a hazard that endangers the driver of the skip lorry and the general public. Here are the reasons not to overload the skip.

• The skip becomes too dangerous to remove

If heavy objects are overflowing the top of the skip it may be too
dangerous to remove. Items could fall out during collection which could
cause damage to the vehicle, driver or general members of the public.

• Items may fall out and hurt pedestrians

The sheets on the skip lorry are designed to stop light material from blowing
out of the skip. The sheets are not load bearing and are not designed to
hold heavy material in place. If the skip is overloaded items could become
loose during transportation causing them to fall and hurt pedestrian’s,
cyclist or another road users.

• Items may fall out and harm the environment

Waste that falls from overloaded skips could be deposited on the roadside
causing harm to the environment and wildlife.

What happens if I overfill a skip?

Overfilling a skip could land you with extra charges and fines. You may
also be required to hire a second skip.

How to avoid overfilling a skip?

Consider all the items that you need to dispose of and think about strategically placing them in the skip to get the best use of the space. Bulky items and furniture should be broken down to enable you to layer items on the bottom of the skip.
